Why is my Body fat percentage no different now from when I was obese?

Basically, I used to be obese, but my body fat percentage was always just in the overweight range rather than, obese. But now I am a healthy weight yet my body fat percentage is exactly the same.

What has caused this?

First we’d have to know which method of body fat testing you did. Because those bathroom scales suck. They are the very least accurate of all methods by a very BIG margin.

The various methods listed by accuracy:

    1) dexa scan – $80 at your local doctors office. Also known as a bone density scan. This is the gold standard test for body fat %
    2) hydrostatic underwater test – $50 at your local colleges sports dept. This is pretty close in accuracy to the dexa scan.
    3) calipers – $30-40 at a qualified gym
    4) bio impedence tests – $??? these are done by gripping a hand device OR the scales I mentioned. They both are terribly inaccurate.

After having said that, it also depends on HOW you lose this “weight”. Some people diet incorrectly and lose mainly their muscle and not their fat. So at the end of the day their body weight is lower but their body fat percentage will be higher.

when you lost all your weight, if all you did was cardio exercising, then you really didnt tone your muscle, leaving you at a healthy weight, but all fat is still blocking the muscles that want to poke through. you have to do strength training and toning to get results you want.
when you only to cardio, you lose weight, but not body fat. when you do strength training, you gain lean muscle, and that is the most important thing to gain in exercising, more important than losing the weight.
look online for strength training, or full body toning exercises, because if you dont tone your full body, nothing will happen, lets say, if you only try to tone your abs. it doesnt work that way, and you need a full body workout to see those numbers in % go down.

You could have lost a lot of lean muscle mass and kept (and even gained) a lot of the fat as a consequence.

    Start lifting heavy weights!
